Market Discussion: Marine Drill Rig Mothballing
For 20 years, Protec, Inc. has been the leader in designing and installing climate control systems specifically engineered for the protection of ships and their cargoes. Protec systems preclude damage or losses resulting from moisture and temperature related problems including: corrosion, mold/mildew, condensation and uncontrolled temperatures. Through the completion of more than 2000 environmental control projects — many executed on board ocean going vessels — Protec has gained unsurpassed experience in marine climate control. Protec’s competence was tested and proven beyond a doubt during the Gulf War, after vehicles and cargo pre-positioned using Protec systems were deployed at 100% of expectations.
Marine Preservation since 1997
The MV Cape Washington was one of an eight-ship project for the Maritime Administration.

Protec’s Approach

It is the Protec philosophy to take the burden for creating a marine climate control system completely off our client. Ship operators competing for Military Sealift Command contracts benefit from Protec’s complete understanding of the MSC’s objectives. Having worked closely with MSC on numerous projects, Protec designs systems to meet or exceed all MSC specifications. As your company for shipboard climate control, Protec helps assure that you will be in compliance with all specified requirements.

MV Green Ridge Protec Pre-positioning Equipment
The MV Green Ridge (left) was prepared by Protec for the pre-positioning of hospital supplies at sea. A Protec IECS Unit (right) is specially engineered for the demands of pre-positioning projects. It combines desiccant dehumidification with a refrigeration a/c system. The unit is monitored around-the-clock by Protec's "CargoWatch."

Turnkey Installation
Protec builds custom systems designed for the requirements of the individual ship and its mission. Each Protec system begins with analysis of those requirements and a recommendation based on creating a fail-safe system. Once approved, Protec sizes and integrates the appropriate equipment, including controls and computer monitoring devices. Protec installs and tests the complete system and trains on board operation and maintenance personnel. Before concluding the installation, Protec assists the operator in presenting the system to the MSC officer in charge for approval.

Understanding Marine Climate Control
Protec builds integrated systems for marine climate control, which combine desiccant dehumidifiers with air conditioning equipment. Protec integrated systems are substantially more effective for climate control than using air conditioning alone. This is because an integrated system can control humidity in the most demanding operating conditions, including temperatures well below 0°F. Since specifications usually require the relative humidity be maintained between 30% to 50% RH, air conditioning systems waste energy attempting to meet humidity control specs. In many locations around the world, air conditioning often cannot control relative humidity.

Built-in Reporting
Protec systems help operators comply with reporting conditions through the patented CargoWatch computer system. Designed by Protec to meet MSC requirements, the CargoWatch computer controls the climate automatically and records conditions throughout the day. Reports are issued weekly and monthly per MSC requirements. Reports are also available any time upon demand.

On Deck Containment—Cocoon
Many times cargo must be contained on deck creating difficult preservation circumstances. Protec meets this challenge with specialized temporary enclosures, ranging from “cocoons” (for containing smaller items) to the entire deck top “Tension Fabric Structures” (for large controlled environments). Protec works closely with Rubb Building Systems to design and build weather tight structures that will stand up during the roughest times at sea, but can be removed at the end of the commission.

Designed for Shipboard Use
All components of a Protec system have been designed specifically for the rugged shipboard environment. Protec understands the space restraint on ships and has designed and specified equipment to meet shipboard requirements. Should maintenance or repairs be required, the Protec system will include onboard the necessary spare parts. Crew members will be trained in maintenance procedures before the ship leaves port. When circumstances require assistance from Protec, company technicians are available by telephone for trouble shooting or site service.

On Time, On Budget!
Protec pre-positioning projects are always on time, on budget and within specification. All projects are typically completed and invoiced without “add-ons” and at the original contract price. In an independent Supplier Performance Review conducted by Dun & Bradstreet Corporation, customers rated Protec as “exceeding expectations” or “meeting expectations” in all performance categories. In the “Total Cost of Project” category, all of Protec’s customers rated us as “exceeding expectations.”
