Protec Dry Film Contact Corrosion Inhibitor
VCI C1 Film:
Used for Metals Exposed
To Outdoor Environments
VCI C1 Film
PROTEC VCI MicroShield is a semi-dry, translucent and removable film composed of a mixture of vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) and petroleum carriers. Applied like paint, it cures to a semi-dry translucent film. It provides universal protection for ferrous and nonferrous metals and alloys exposed to outdoor environments.

How It Works:

Protec MicroShield is used to protect uncovered, exterior surfaces, as well as readily accessible interior surfaces. It may be used successfully for the protection of equipment during storage, transport, or while in use. Although classified as temporary because of its ease of removal, its corrosion resistance and term of protection exceed many traditional paints and coatings.

PROTEC VCI MicroShield offers the most advanced corrosion protection available by continually releasing vapors which adsorb onto the protected surface forming a chemical shield that blocks the electrochemical reaction necessary for corrosion at the molecular level.

Unique Advantages:

Its VCI vapors will penetrate through rust and into tight crevices, displacing water, and sealing the surface to prevent further corrosion. It provides effective protection even if the surface has been contaminated with salt or chemicals. There is no specific surface preparation requirement.

Ideal for use as an overcoat on equipment or vehicles to be stored outside or when shipped overseas, Protec MicroShied inhibitor protects painted surfaces, bare metal, hinges, crevices, etc., from atmospheric corrosion. It also eliminates "white rust" on galvanized parts. It can be expected to give high levels of corrosion protection for up to 12 months when used outdoors.

PROTEC VCI MicroShield is a thixatropic and self-healing film. It is resistant to sag, runoff and flow, even under high temperature conditions. It is a non conductive film, with high resistivity and insulating properties and effectively prevents galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals. It has excellent U.V. resistance, providing optimal outdoor performance without cracking or chipping of the protective film after prolonged exposure to sunlight.

PROTEC VCI MicroShield is easily removed with mineral spirits, alkaline cleaners or vapor degreasing solvents. It meets requirements of MIL-C-1617D, Grade 1.

Non-Hazardous:

PROTEC VCIs are non hazardous and environmentally safe. They contain no nitrite, chromate or phosphate inhibitors. A soft but dry preservative film, it is suitable for handling --its additives will not transfer to hands and it will not absorb dust or dirt.

Application:

Minimal surface preparation is required for superior corrosion protection, as adhesion to and penetration of pre-rusted surfaces is excellent. It has a wide range of applications, including:

• Bare Metal
• Bearings
• Boilers
• Cable and Chain
• Castings
• Cylinders
• Compressors
• Drill Pipe
• Heat Exchangers
• Hinges
• Motor Couplings
• Motor Shafts
• Nuts and Bolts
• Painted Surfaces
• Pistons
• Pumps
• Sucker Rods
• Threaded Surfaces
• Tooling and Dies
• Transformers
• Tubular Products
• Turbines
• Valves
• Wire Rope

Application Instructions:

• Surface Preparation: Remove dirt, oil, grease and loose rust according to job specifications.

• Application: Thinning or dilution not normally required. If necessary, use mineral spirits. Spray, brush or roll on surface to a heavy wet coat.

• Typical spray configuration: Conventional spray -- DeVilbiss MBC or JGA with 704E tip/air-cap. Airless spray -- Graco 205-591 Bulldog, .0-17" tip, 1700 psi, 3/8" ID hose.

• Temperature: Keep material at 32° F (0° C) or above. Air and surface temperature from 0° F (-17° C) to 120° F (49° C.)

• Dry Time: Normally tack free in 2 hours @ 75° F (Longer at lower temperatures. Increased air movement will speed drying.

• Coverage: 450 sq. ft/gal @ 2 mils dry (3 mils wet).

• Clean up: Clean up with mineral spirits or similar solvent.

• Quantities: PROTEC VCI MicroShield C1 is available in pints, gallons, 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums.

• Storage: Store between 0° F (-17° C) and 120° F (49° C). Shelf life is two years minimum.

Suggested Specification Guide

USE: The VCI contact inhibitor film is used to protect bare metal or painted exterior surfaces and readily available interior surfaces during storage, processing, or when in use where a firm, dry, yet removable film is desired. Typical dry film thicknesses range from 1-5 mils (25-125 microns).

For the purposes of this specification, the VCI preservative shall have the following properties:

• VCI component shall be non hazardous and environmentally safe.
• Film shall provide multi-metal protection to carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, cast iron, aluminum & galvanized metal.
• Dry, firm film
• Removal with mineral spirits or alkaline cleaner.
• Pounds/gal (SG): 7.2-7.4 (0.87-0-89)
• Volume % solids: 55%-57%
• Weight % solids: 57%-62%
• Coverage: 904 sq. ft. @ 1 mil dry
• Viscosity: (23° C) 600-5000 cps
• Salt Spray resistance (ASTM B117): 300 hours @ 1 mil (25 microns)
• Flash point, minimum: 140° F (60° C)
