Protec Vapor Corrosion Inhibitor Oil Additive
Protec Oil Additive:
Used for Corrosion Protection in
Oil reservoirs, Engines, Oil Sumps
and Internal Equipment Environments.
Oil Additive
PROTEC Oil Additive is a mixture of vapor corrosion inhibitors (VCIs) and petroleum carriers. Forming a protective film which is oily, translucent and removable, it provides optimal corrosion protection for all metals in oil sumps, engines, crankcases, reservoirs and hydraulics, and other internal equipment environments. The film, which is non conductive with high resistivity and insulating properties, prevents galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals. PROTEC Oil Additive performs effectively in aggressive environment and adverse conditions. It is recommended to extend the service life of heavy equipment, engines and hydraulics. It may also be applied to surfaces for sheltered exterior corrosion protection. It may be "fogged" into larger cavities, and tanks for extended storage protection.

How It Works

Virtually all enclosed lubricating or hydraulic oil systems are susceptible to corrosion caused by condensation of humid air. While the problem of corrosion exists during operation, it is exacerbated during periods of lay up, transit or intermittent use. This is because during shutdown periods, oil drains from the lubricated surfaces, exposing them to moisture and corrosive agents for extended periods.

To solve this problem, PROTEC VCI Oil Additive was developed. It is a high-performance concentrate -- formulated with vapor phase and contact inhibitors that boost protection over common rust preservative compounds. Self-healing and lubricating, PROTEC VCI Oil Additive will penetrate through rust and into tight crevices, displacing water, sealing the surface to prevent further corrosion.

Once added to the original oil, it protects in two ways:

1) During operation inhibitors are spread over internal parts by the movement of the oil. Once in contact with the metal surfaces, the VCIs form a microscopic shield, which precludes corrosion.

2) When equipment is idle, the vaporizing inhibitor recondense leave the oil to make contact with all internal metal surfaces and form a protective barrier.

The combined action provides complete protection for internal system parts that otherwise are increasingly affected by corrosion through contamination both during operation and shutdown.

Unique Advantages:

• Performs effectively even under the adverse conditions of 100% relative humidity and in the presence of such corrosive species as chlorides, sulfur dioxide, or hydrogen sulfide.
• Provides high levels of corrosion resistance -- up to 24 months of sheltered protection in corrosive environments.
• Contains no nitrite, chromate or phosphate inhibitors or silicones.
• Easily removed with mineral spirits, alkaline cleaners or vapor degreasing solvents.
• Provides moisture displacing and penetrating film properties.
• Tacky film provides good lubricity to moving and sliding parts.
• Suitable for use from -40°F to 400°F.
• Can be added to lubricating oils and greases to improve their corrosion resistance and afford vapor corrosion inhibiting ability.
• Universal protection for ferrous and non ferrous metals and alloys.
• Prevents galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals.

Non-Hazardous

PROTEC VCIs are non hazardous and environmentally safe. They contain no nitrite, chromate or phosphate inhibitors. A soft but dry preservative film, it is suitable for handling --its additives will not transfer to hands and it will not absorb dust or dirt.

Typical Applications:

• Gear boxes
• Crankcases
• Threaded connections
• Fuel tanks
• Hydraulic fluid reservoirs

Installation

Add to oil at 10%-20% concentration. If used for interior protection with oil sump full, 5%-10% concentration may be used. If slushed and drained, use 10%-20% concentration.

Available in pints, gallons, 5-gallon pails and 55-gallon drums. Store between
0°F (-17°C) and 120°F (49°C). Shelf life two years, minimum.

Suggested Specification Guide:

USE: The VCI oil additive is used in oil sumps, reservoirs and other areas where protection from condensate corrosion is necessary. May also be fogged into larger voids for similar protection.

For the purposes of this specification, the VCI preservative shall have the following properties:

• VCI component shall be non hazardous and environmentally safe.
• Multi-metal protection including carbon steel, stainless steel, copper, babbit, brass, cadmium, cast iron, aluminum & zinc.
• Appearance: Oily, tacky film subject to removal with mineral spirits or alkaline cleaner.
• Carrier: High-purity paraffinic oil.
• Filtration Pass: less than 1 micron.
• Pounds/gal (SG): 7.3-7.5 (0.875-0.900).
• Flash point, minimum: 230°F (165°C).
